Counter? I don't even KNOW her!

That title occurred to me when I was painstakingly adjusting the "finished" counters this morning so that they would fit nicely. I thought to myself, "By nighttime this will be completed and I will be able to blog about it, and I will need to have a title for my blog post". I suppose now I am officially a blogger. Someone who thinks about her blog and ranks daily events according to their bloggability.

Back to the counters. This is what they looked like when I initially put them in:

Not bad...

Yikes!

I spent far too long fitting them again. I haven't quite figured out this whole fitting business. I understand the concept of a scribe and a template, but even knowing that, I am at a loss for efficient ways to do it (comments are welcome).

This is a great shot of me cutting the countertops on garbage. I went back and forth about 20 times to make minute cuts. It turned out pretty well...but I have to admit, the seams are not perfect. They are supposed to be invisible, but I could not get the clamping to work.

I'm not sure what the best method is, but I used blocks glued to the surface and then clamped. Either the F-clamps didn't tighten enough (F-clamp is a name of a clamp, I am not trying to obscure profanities) or the blocks popped off. I think I should have used larger blocks and pipe clamps (didn't have any). (Suggestions welcome).

Either way, the counters still look great, and any other kind of countertop would show a seam, so I figure we are doing ok.

The counters are in!

Steph is stoked, and so is her espresso machine.

Steph is also stoked because she hired Demolition Paul today. If you haven't seen the other forgotten side of the kitchen, this is what it looked like:

Now it looks like this:

I know what you are thinking. Who puts a door in front of a window? Precisely! Steph hired a guy off Kijiji to take it down. Neither of us really knows anything about demolishing walls and this guy did it in 2 hours on the spot. We also weren't sure if it was load bearing so we thought we'd play it safe and hire a random guy off Kijiji.

Even though the space behind the wall is only about 3 feet deep, the whole room has completely opened up.

T minus 3 days to use the table saw...
