Let there be sink
It sure beats the old sink!
I captured it in all its glory, relegated to the back porch amongst all of the other rusting garbage.
But seriously, today was a big day. I've been dreading the countertops only because they are a) arguably the most important feature in a kitchen, and b) the area in which I have the least experience (other than drywalling, but thankfully I take countertops more seriously and, therefore, try harder). I may be speaking too soon, however. The only countertop in now is under the sink. The rest are going in tomorrow. I have to scribe around this tedious chimney (once a nice feature, now a pain in the ASS!) so I'm going to make exact templates because I can't afford - financially, temporally, emotionally, emotionally (yes, I wrote it twice) - to make a mistake. Who knows though. I feel like all the planning in the world can't compensate for good old fashioned experience.
Speaking of experience, check out how many cooks we had in the kitchen today!
One guy on electric (Electric Dave) - Dave comes over every other day - two guys on the sink, and one girl twiddling her thumbs and VERY excited to see the sink go in.
I actually didn't think the sink was going to go in today - I know, the DRAMA! The plumbers said they might not be able to make it, and then as I was installing the counter, I realized I had miscalculated the length where the two pieces meet in the corner:
I want the adjoining counter to butt up against the other piece where the overhang finishes but I miscalculated the overhang. CLASSIC rookie move - I forgot to account for the thickness of the door + the overhang itself. Anyway, boring story short, I had to cut the counter down (thank God it was down, not up) and unfortunately, I also had to forgo the cleat that provides support to the connecting piece. I'm hoping that having double the thickness on the joint will provide enough surface area to strengthen the seal.
AS SOON AS I finished putting the counter down for the second time, the plumber rang the doorbell. AND Electric Dave showed up. I was so excited I didn't know what to do. But then the plumbers lowered the sink into the counter and started looking at each other like something was wrong. I almost had a heart attack. Keep in mind that I am completely frazzled at this point, the kitchen looks like a cross between a garage sale and a dumpster (garbage sale?), and I thought I had JUST finished this shit in time for a sink to function for lattes tomorrow. The plumber's answer was that the faucet might interfere with the window sill. It doesn't.
